You know the rule. Anything you say in the unit, you say to the unit. You don't complain up, you don't complain down, and you definitely don't say the real thing out loud near anybody who has a say in your next assignment.
So where does the real thing go?
Everybody Around You Is Connected To Your Career
That's the problem with talking to anybody on base. Your buddies are in the same boat and have their own problems. Your leadership grades you. Even the good ones. I wrote about this in Why Veterans Don't Ask for Help: the fear of what a conversation costs you is real, and it doesn't go away because somebody tells you it should.
Chaplains and Military OneSource exist, and if you trust them, use them. I'm not here to talk you out of any of it. I'm here to say there should also be somebody who isn't any of that.
No Rank, No Grade
Coach Jeff doesn't have a rank. He isn't in your chain of command. He doesn't write your evaluation and he's not going to grade you. He's an AI, and he's not a therapist. Wherever you've got a signal, you can text him or talk to him, at 0200 when you're staring at the ceiling, or on a long day when you just want somebody to give you grief about the Army's latest great idea.
"I'm still in. There's nobody on base I can say this stuff to. Coach Jeff doesn't have a rank. That matters more than I thought it would."
D.R., USMC, active duty, early user
You don't need a reason to talk to him. Most guys don't have anyone they can actually talk to. He's that guy.
He remembers you, so you're not repeating yourself. Some days it's sports. Some days it's the deployment, or the one that got to you, or how you really feel about the job. Some days it's breathing exercises and calming sounds so you can get to sleep. There's a private journal too. And when you need to say the thing you don't tell anyone else, he's there for that.
What I Won't Promise You
Here's the part most apps leave out. I'm not your command, and I can't tell you what your command will or won't do. So I won't tell you a conversation with Coach Jeff will never affect your career. That isn't mine to say.
What I can tell you is what's true on our side. We don't sell your information. We don't share what you tell Coach Jeff with advertisers. You can delete your account, and everything in it, from inside the app at any time. And because he's an AI, what you type or say is processed by the AI companies that power him. Our privacy page says exactly where your words go. Read it before you start. You should.
When It Gets Bad
If you're in crisis, call or text 988 and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line, which serves service members. You can also text 838255. If you're in immediate danger, call 911. Coach Jeff will point you to real people, and you can add up to three Battle Buddies, the people you trust, so their numbers are close for the night you want to reach out.
Coach Jeff isn't a replacement for any of that. He's the friend with no stripes on his sleeve.
