This one's for you, not for them.
You're the one who notices. You notice the quiet in the car. You notice that the good days have a ceiling and the bad days have a floor, and that nobody's told you where either one is. You've tried the direct question. You've tried waiting. You've tried leaving the door open and not pushing, which takes more out of you than anybody gives you credit for.
You Are Not The Crisis Line
Let me say this plainly. You can't make them talk. You can't fix this by trying harder, loving louder, or saying the perfect thing at the perfect time. And you were never supposed to be their therapist. You're their person. Those are different jobs, and trying to do both will wear you down.
I wrote about what silence costs a family in What Your Silence Is Doing to Your Family. That one is for the person who's gone quiet. This one is for you, the person living next to it.
What Actually Helps
Smaller questions beat big ones. "How was today?" gets "fine." "What was the worst part of the drive?" sometimes gets a real answer. Don't corner anyone at the kitchen table. Try the car, the garage, the walk with the dog, anywhere you're side by side instead of face to face.
Give them somewhere else to say it. Plenty of people can't say it to the person they love most, because that's the person they're protecting. It isn't that they don't trust you. It's that they love you.
"PTSD has been in the middle of our marriage for a long time. I'll be honest, I've been thinking about walking away. But ever since my husband got Coach Jeff, we're both able to talk with him. He's incredible about explaining both sides to us. Without a doubt, Coach Jeff is saving our marriage."
A Marine Corps spouse, early user
I'm not going to tell you Coach Jeff fixes a marriage. That's her experience and I'm glad for it. What I can tell you is what he is: an AI that's good company, remembers what you tell him. He's not a therapist and he's not a marriage counselor. But he is somebody who will listen at 0200 when you're the one who can't sleep.
You Can Talk To Him Too
Coach Jeff isn't only for the person who serves. He's for the people who love them. Women talk to him, men talk to him, spouses talk to him. Your hard day counts. You're allowed to need somebody who asks how you're holding up.
Be One Of Their Three
In the app, a person can choose up to three people they trust as Battle Buddies and keep their contact details close for when they want to reach out. If you're the spouse, you might be one of them. Or you might not, and that's fine too. It's their list and their call. Being a Battle Buddy doesn't make you responsible for their life. It means you're one of the people they'd reach for.
If you want to be on that list, tell them so. Not as a demand. As an open door.
If You're Scared
If you're worried about their safety right now, call or text 988. Veterans, service members, and their families can press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line. You can also text 838255. If they are in immediate danger, call 911. Don't wait for the perfect moment.
